Troubleshooting Water Problems

Why Is My Hot Tub Water Cloudy? 7 Causes and Fixes

By Bubble Balance · May 15, 2026

Cloudy water is the most common hot tub complaint we hear on the Cape Fear coast — and it’s almost always fixable once you find the cause.

The seven usual suspects

  1. Low sanitizer. Not enough chlorine or bromine lets particles and bacteria build up. Test and bring sanitizer into range.
  2. Unbalanced pH or alkalinity. High pH causes cloudiness and scale. Rebalance in order — alkalinity, then pH.
  3. Dirty or worn filter. A clogged filter can’t trap fine particles. Rinse it, or deep-soak it. See our filter service.
  4. High calcium hardness. Too much calcium clouds water and scales surfaces.
  5. Body oils, lotions and products. Sunscreen, lotion and detergents overwhelm the water. A clarifier and good filtration help.
  6. Old, worn-out water. High total dissolved solids make water dull no matter what you add — time to drain and refill.
  7. Not enough circulation/filtration time. Water needs to turn over daily to stay clear.

The fast fix

Test the water, correct sanitizer and pH, clean the filter, and run the jets to circulate. Add a clarifier if needed and re-check in a few hours. If it’s still cloudy after balancing, the water is likely worn out and due for a drain and refill.
