How to Fix Foamy Hot Tub Water
A little foam that vanishes quickly is normal. Thick, lingering foam means something’s off in the water.
What causes hot tub foam
Foam comes from a buildup of organic compounds that lower the water’s surface tension — most often body oils, lotions, sunscreen, detergent residue from swimsuits, and the general “wear” of old water. Low calcium hardness can make foaming worse, too.
How to clear it
- Test and balance the water — especially calcium hardness and pH.
- Clean or replace the filter; foam often signals it’s overloaded.
- Add a hot tub defoamer for fast, temporary relief before guests arrive.
- If foam keeps returning, the water is saturated with organics — do a drain and refill.
Prevent it next time
Rinse off before soaking, wash swimsuits without heavy detergent, and keep up with weekly water care so organics never get a chance to accumulate. Our weekly water care keeps foam from ever becoming a problem.
