How to Read Hot Tub Test Strips: A Coastal NC Water-Testing Guide
Test strips are the single cheapest tool for keeping a hot tub healthy, yet they are also the most misread. Dip them wrong, read them in bad light, or ignore what the pads are telling you, and you end up chasing cloudy water and itchy skin all summer. How to Read Hot Tub Test Strips the Right Way in Coastal NC
Technique matters more than most owners think. Dip a fresh strip into the tub elbow-deep for a full second, pull it straight out without shaking, and hold it level so the pads do not run into each other. Read it against the bottle’s color chart within about 15 seconds, in natural daylight if you can — reading under a yellow porch light near a Wrightsville Sound dock will throw every color off. Keep the bottle sealed and out of the humid pool-equipment closet, because damp strips give false readings, and never test right after adding chemicals.
Most strips read four to seven things at once. The three that decide whether the water is safe and comfortable are sanitizer, pH, and total alkalinity — read those first, every time.
What Each Pad Is Telling You
- Free chlorine (or bromine): your sanitizer. Aim for 3–5 ppm chlorine or 4–6 ppm bromine. A pale pad after a full hot tub means the sanitizer got used up by bathers and needs a dose now.
- pH: target 7.2–7.8. Low pH corrodes heaters and stings eyes; high pH clouds water and lets scale build on the waterline — a constant fight in our hard coastal water.
- Total alkalinity: target 80–120 ppm. Think of it as pH’s shock absorber. Low alkalinity makes pH bounce after every rainstorm.
- Total hardness: often high on the coast; very high hardness drives the chalky scale you see near Leland and Brunswick County.
- Cyanuric acid: only on some strips; matters for outdoor tubs in the strong Cape Fear sun.
How Often to Test in the Wilmington-Area Climate
The generic advice of “twice a week” undersells our conditions. In a Wilmington summer, test a lightly used residential tub two to three times a week, and test a busy family or rental spa before and after heavy use. Always test after a thunderstorm — a heavy coastal rain dilutes sanitizer and can crash pH overnight. Pollen season in spring and blowing sand near the beaches both add organic load that eats chlorine faster than the calendar suggests.
Keep a small log, even just a note on your phone, so you can see patterns: if pH creeps up every three days, that is a fill-water issue worth solving rather than re-correcting forever.
