How to Balance Hot Tub Water: A Beginner’s Step-by-Step Guide

Balanced water is the difference between a spa that’s clear, comfortable and ready to use and one that’s cloudy, harsh on your skin, or quietly scaling up your heater. The good news: balancing a hot tub really comes down to a handful of numbers and doing things in the right order.

The four numbers that matter

• pH — aim for 7.2–7.8. This controls comfort and how well your sanitizer works.
• Total alkalinity — aim for 80–120 ppm. It’s the buffer that keeps pH from bouncing around.
• Sanitizer — 3–5 ppm chlorine or 4–6 ppm bromine. This is what actually keeps the water safe.
• Calcium hardness — 150–250 ppm. Too low corrodes equipment; too high causes scale.

Balance in the right order

Always work in this sequence, because each step affects the next:

1. Alkalinity first. Adjust total alkalinity into range before anything else — it stabilizes pH.
2. pH second. Once alkalinity is set, nudge pH to about 7.4.
3. Calcium hardness third. Add a hardness increaser if you’re low.
4. Sanitizer last. With everything balanced, your sanitizer will hold and work far better.

Wait at least 20–30 minutes with the jets running between chemical additions, then re-test before adding more. Add chemicals to the water — never water to chemicals — and keep the cover off for 15–20 minutes after dosing.

Test on a real schedule
