Why Your Hot Tub pH Keeps Rising: Aeration, Alkalinity and the Coastal NC Fix
You lower the pH on Sunday, it reads 7.4 and life is good. By Wednesday it is back to 7.8 or higher, the water has a faint haze, and there is a chalky ring at the waterline. If that cycle sounds familiar, you are not doing anything wrong with the acid — you are fighting a cause the acid does not touch. Rising pH is one of the most common complaints we hear in Wilmington-area spa water care, and it almost always comes down to two things: total alkalinity that is set too high, and aeration from the jets.
Here is why the pH keeps climbing in a hot tub on the coast, how to tell which cause you are dealing with, and how to make the fix stick.
The chemistry behind rising hot tub pH in coastal NC spas
Hot tub water holds dissolved carbon dioxide, and that CO2 is mildly acidic — it helps keep pH down. Anything that drives CO2 out of the water lets the pH rise. Hot water holds less dissolved gas than cool water, so a 102°F spa off-gasses constantly. Jets and air injectors churn the surface and speed it up. Meanwhile, total alkalinity acts as a buffer that resists pH change. When TA is high, the water “wants” to settle at a higher pH, and every acid dose gets absorbed and undone within days. High TA plus heavy aeration is the classic rising-pH combination, and a rental spa on Wrightsville Beach that runs its jets for four families a week is a textbook case.
Check total alkalinity first
Test TA before you touch anything else. For hot tubs the working range is roughly 60–80 ppm — lower than the 80–120 ppm printed on many pool guides — precisely because constant aeration pushes pH up on its own. If TA reads 120 or more, that is your problem. Lowering it takes acid: dry acid (sodium bisulfate) or muriatic acid, added in measured doses with the jets off, followed by running the jets to aerate the pH back up without lifting TA again. It can take several rounds over a few days. Once TA sits in range, pH stops drifting as hard and the ring at the waterline stops forming.
Aeration: your jets are raising pH every time you soak
Even with TA in range, a spa that runs the air blower and every jet for an hour a night will see pH creep. That is normal. The fix is to stop fighting it with big acid corrections and instead accept a small dose after heavy use, and to close the air controls when the tub is idle so the filter cycle is not aerating an empty spa. Keep the cover on: under the coastal humidity you may not lose much water to evaporation, but an uncovered tub in a Carolina Beach breeze gasses off CO2 all day long.
Fill water, sanitizers and salt systems
Source water sets the starting line. Well water in Brunswick and Pender counties often carries high alkalinity from the limestone formations it moves through, so a fresh fill can start at TA 150 or more and need acid on day one. Sanitizer choice matters too: dichlor is close to neutral, bromine tablets and non-chlorine shock (MPS) run acidic and can mask a rising trend, while calcium hypochlorite and liquid chlorine push pH up. Saltwater chlorine generators raise pH as a by-product of making chlorine, so salt-system owners along the coast should expect to dose acid more often. And the most common self-inflicted cause: dumping baking soda or “alkalinity up” every time pH dips, which piles TA back up and restarts the whole cycle.
How to stop the climb for good
Set TA in the 60–80 range, keep pH between 7.2 and 7.8, and test twice a week. Close air controls when the spa is idle, cover it whenever it is not in use, and fill through a hose pre-filter when you refill from a well or a high-alkalinity supply. If pH still races up within a day of correcting it, look for scale on the heater element or in the plumbing — a coastal spa that has run high pH for months is probably carrying calcium deposits that keep shedding into the water, and that calls for a descale and a drain rather than more acid.
