Hot Tub Folliculitis (‘Hot Tub Rash’): Causes and Prevention

By Bubble Balance · May 17, 2026

“Hot tub rash” — medically, Pseudomonas folliculitis — is an itchy, bumpy red rash that shows up hours to a couple of days after soaking. It’s almost always a sign of one thing: water that wasn’t properly sanitized.

Why it happens

Warm water is a perfect environment for Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria. When sanitizer levels drop too low — even briefly — the bacteria multiply and get into hair follicles, especially under swimsuits where fabric holds water against skin.

How to prevent it

  • Keep sanitizer in range at all times (3–5 ppm chlorine / 4–6 ppm bromine).
  • Test before and after heavy use; shock after parties.
  • Keep the filter clean and the water circulating.
  • Shower and remove swimsuits after soaking.
  • Refresh worn-out water on schedule.

The reliable fix

Consistent sanitizer is the whole game, and the most common reason it slips is inconsistent testing. Our weekly water care keeps sanitizer dialed in every single visit, so the water stays genuinely safe to enjoy.

This is general information, not medical advice — see a clinician for a persistent or worsening rash.
