Chlorine vs Bromine for Hot Tubs: Which Is Better?

By Bubble Balance · May 9, 2026

Both chlorine and bromine are proven hot tub sanitizers. The right one depends on how you use your spa and how sensitive you are to smell and skin feel.

Chlorine

Fast-acting and inexpensive. It kills contaminants quickly and is easy to find, but it’s more affected by high temperatures and gives off that classic “chlorine” smell when it combines with organics. Best for tubs that are tested and dosed frequently.

Bromine

More stable in hot water and gentler-smelling, which makes it popular for hot tubs specifically. It works across a wider pH range and stays active longer, though it’s a bit pricier and slower to establish. Many spa owners with sensitive skin prefer it.

The bottom line

If you soak often and want low-odor, stable water, bromine is a great fit. If you want fast, economical sanitizing and don’t mind testing regularly, chlorine works well. Either way, balanced water and a clean filter matter more than the chemical you choose. Not sure which suits your tub? Ask us.
